The Ayan Duo, violinist/violist Julia Kuzmina and pianist Yanzhima Tsybikova, formed their ensemble in 2023 while studying chamber music with the renowned pianist Lambert Orkis at Temple University’s Boyer College of Music and Dance. The name Ayan, derived from the Khakass and Buryat languages of Siberia, symbolizes “journey” and “destiny,” reflecting the duo’s shared heritage and artistic path from Russia to the United States.
Born in Siberia, both musicians received their early training at prestigious Russian institutions, developing a performance style marked by depth, lyricism, and strong ensemble collaboration. The duo actively performs for communities across the United States, presenting engaging programs that combine major chamber works with lesser-known repertoire for violin, viola, and piano.
Their repertoire spans a wide range of styles and colors, from the Romantic lyricism of Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, and César Franck to the expressive intensity of Rebecca Clarke and Paul Hindemith, as well as the vibrant rhythms of Astor Piazzolla. Their programs highlight both technical versatility and a commitment to storytelling through chamber music.
In 2025, Kuzmina and Tsybikova received the Donald Spieth Memorial Award as members of the Meridian Quintet. The Ayan Duo performed as guest artists at the Triumph Music Festival in the Kimmel Center Ballroom in Philadelphia. Most recently, the Ayan Duo won the Beverly Hills National Auditions and will be presented in 2027 by the City of Beverly Hills as part of the Music in the Mansion series at the historic Greystone Mansion, while also receiving engagement considerations from the Consortium of Chamber Music Presenters of Southern California.
